Ankylosing Spondylitis is one of the types of arthritis affecting the spine and large joints in the body. The inflammation is observed between vertebrae and in the joints between the spine and pelvis. The disease is common mainly in men and observed during the start of adulthood (observed in 0.1% to 0.5% of adult population). Diagnosis in the early stages of the disease helps to reduce the pain and might prevent significant deformity

Symptoms

Some of the early symptoms observed in Ankylosing Spondylitis are

  • Stiffness in lower back, buttocks, and hips
  • Overgrowth and abnormal joining of bones (Bony fusion)
  • Pain in ligaments and tendons attached to bones
  • Blurred vision and inflammation in eyes

Treatment

There is no cure for Ankylosing Spondylitis but the physical treatments can improve the functioning of the body and reduce the discomfort. The exercising and Physical therapy help to maintain a good posture, prevent pain and deformity and reduce the stiffness in the back. Medications like NSAIDs and anti-rheumatic drugs helps to reduce the pain and stiffness.

Aerobic activity for 20 to 30 minutes, exercising and stretching the body helps to maintain the posture of the body and reduce the pain. Stretching exercises in the home help to improve the flexibility and physical function in the body.
